Wheat Allergy Cure - Wheat Free Diet
Wheat, being one of the major constituents of all kinds of food, is very difficult to avoid. Yet the fact remains that for those people suffering from wheat allergy the only treatment available is to eliminate wheat from their diets and replace it with some other wholesome food such as rice. However, there are certain minor ingredients made from wheat which can be consumed by wheat allergic people as stated by the European Food Safety Authority, which includes:
1) maltodextrin
2) glucose syrup and dextrin
3) spirits made from gluten
In wheat free diet all that you need to do is to eliminate all the products made from wheat and wheat flour. However, it is not easy to completely eliminate wheat from your diet but it is easier as compared to elimination of gluten. Instead of wheat you can opt for rye, oats, rice, barley, etc.
Though it is a good idea to replace wheat if you feel that you are hypersensitive to it but before completely changing your diet, consult your physician. And also consult a nutritionist to make sure that your body is provided with the required food supplements.
It is best to avoid foods like bread, pasta, soups, sauces, and other foods which contain wheat in large amount. The first step towards eliminating wheat products would be to read the labels carefully, although you might find this exercise time-consuming but gradually you will get use to it. Look out for hidden source of wheat in the ingredients.
Here are some of the foods that contain wheat as their ingredient and should be avoided, rather eliminated:
1) Bread crumbs, bran, flour, wheat, whole wheat berries, pasta
2) Wheat gluten, wheat starch, cracker meal
3) Soy sauce, vegetable starch, bulgur
4) High protein flour, hydrolyzed protein, hydrolyzed vegetable flour
5) Couscous, durum, farina, kamut
6) Gelatinized starch, natural flavorings, vegetable gum
7) Modified food starch, starch vegetable
8) Bleached flour, corn starch, breakfast cereals.
Now for the wheat substitution, instead of wheat flour, you can either use rye flour, potato flour, rolled oats, oat flour, or rye meal. Apart from these, the following are some foods which can replace wheat from your daily diets:
1) As far as drinks other than water are concerned, you can opt for coffee, tea, fruit juice, milks, carbonated drinks etc.
2) For cereals, pure corn, rye, rice, barley, oats, etc can be used
3) Custard, Gelatin, water or fruit ices, oatmeal etc for deserts.
4) All salad dressings and salad gravy should be prepared without wheat products.
5) Dairy products such as cottage cheese, cheese, yoghurt, milk etc
6) Avoid wheat fillers in roast, boiled, broiled, meats.
7) All canned, frozen or fresh vegetables as well as fruits.
8) Corn syrup, jam, honey, etc
9) Salt, chillies. Condiments, herbs, olives, pickles, peanut butter etc.
It is very likely for wheat to come in contact with other foods during preparation or processing. So take care to use separate cutting board and utensils and label them. If you are dining out then go for simple dishes without any sauce. Always tell the waiter about the allergy. Be careful about the traces of wheat that are sometimes found in the preparation of condiments and spices.
