The sunburn is referred to the reddening of a particular area of the skin due to unprotected exposure to sunlight. It occurs when the exposure exceeds the capability of the pigment to protect the skin. Many of us generally consider that unprotected exposure to the sun for about an hour or so won’t make much difference. But, as a matter of fact, just 15 minutes exposure to sunlight can inflame your skin. Sunburn is one of the most common problems that are being faced by most of the people and thus should not be treated as insignificant. It could lead to physical deformity and even death if it is not properly taken care of.
You might not most likely notice the sunburn unless you feel the pain. However, once you start feeling the pain, it means that the damage has been already done. Swelling, skin peeling, blisters, etc are some of the common signs of acute sunburn. Now what to do when you are suffering for sunburn? Following are some of the things that could be done to protect your skin from further damages:
1) You can take a cool shower or press a washed cloth on the burnt area to reduce the burning sensation. Adding baking powder to the water helps in reducing the pain.
2) Applying Witch Hazel for about 20 minutes or so 3-4 times a day also helps in soothing the sunburn.
3) To reduce the dryness and peeling, applying a good moisturizer will do the trick. For the itchiness, an over the counter medicines such as benadryl, ibuprofen etc. will help.
4) Aloe gel is one of the most common home remedies that helps in soothing the inflammation and the relieving the pain.
5) Drink lots of water to hydrate the body.
6) Avoid going out in the sun during peak hours. Avoid exposure to the sun for long period.
7) Always put on a good sunscreen lotion with a high SPF of not less than 30.
8) Bandaging the blisters will be helpful in avoiding infection.
Sunburn is a burn though not similar to thermal burn but it does increase your chances of suffering from skin cancer in the long run. So it is very important to take proper care of your skin. The best medicine for sunburn is prevention. If the burn is accompanied by dizziness, blisters and vision problems, then consult a physician immediately.
