Steroids abuse is a very common occurrence among the people of all age group. In order to enhance their performance and to improve their physical appearance, most commonly athletes are abused. Even teens and youths who are not athletes also abuse steroids in the desire of getting a six-pack body. Steroids are usually used for medication purpose and for the purpose only small amounts of it are used. However, those who abuse it may take doses of about 10-100 times higher than the amount being used for the medications.

Abusers usually mix different steroids together as they believe that pyramiding and stacking benefits their body thereby lessening the effects of the steroids on their body. However there is no scientific research to support this statement.

According to the CDC’s survey in the year 2007, about 4% of high school students in the US use anabolic steroid pills or shots without prescription which is illegal. Young people are also found to be using steroids meant for animals as it is easier to get it and is inexpensive as compared to the anabolic steroids. These people who abuse steroids tend to put themselves at the risk of infectious diseases by sharing needles. According to some researchers, anabolic drugs can be addictive however; more research and studies are required to support it.

Most of the anabolic drug users are the middle class heterosexual men, among the 25 years old age group. According to a recent survey, about 78.4% of steroid users were non-competitive body builders and non-athletes. As per the result of a study that was conducted revealed that generally the steroid abusers do not trust their physician which leads them to concealing the truth from them. However about 66% of the abusers were willing to undergo medical study. Recent studies show that steroid abusers are most likely to suffer from muscle dysmorphia.
