FDA is seeking tougher rules regarding the use of tanning beds since recent studies have shown that among those who use tanning beds in their teens, the chances of suffering from melanoma is increased by 75%. As per statistics, about 2.3 million teens tan in beds annually. And since constant reports linking to cancer began to pour in, the FDA has decided to impose strict regulations on the use of tanning beds. Last summer the World Health Organization enlisted tanning beds and the sun lamps among the top major risks of cancer causers.
These strict rules have been imposed because despite the recommendations to not use them at all, people will continue to use them. So, just to make it more safe and as low risk as possible, these steps have been taken by the FDA. Young people have been lured to use this tanning beds with their manipulative advertisements making them believe that it is a healthy cool look. But dermatologists claim that, "There is no such thing as a healthy tan". According to the experts, spending time on the sunbed is just as dangerous as spending too much time in the sun.
A 10% tax has been imposed on tanning services in order to protect the freedom of individuals to acquire a suntan. This step was taken in order to reduce the risk of cancer as much as possible. It is worth noting that so far, there is no scientific study that claims that tanning beds are a safe way to darken human skin. But there is a proven link between cancer and tanning beds. Also, there is a reliable evidence that claims that even moderate use by teenagers can be deadly.
Yet the Tanning Association strongly argues that tanning is safe unless overused. They claim that no new science will be able to justify the FDA regulations.
