The risk of food allergy in an individual is higher in those people whose parent, sibling or a close relative are allergic to any food item. The chances of getting allergic reactions to food are also high with those who suffer from hay fever or other atopic conditions such as eczema, asthma etc. If both the parents are allergic than there are 70% chances for the child to develop allergic reactions. However, food allergies are very common among children. As the child grows they tend to develop a strong immune system that can fight the food allergens and overcome the allergic reactions.
A couple of years ago, in the year 2003, the august issue of the journal of allergy and clinical immunology published that those child who are born by caesarian are at a higher risk of developing food allergy. The study has found a close relationship between caesarian and development of food allergy in children whose mothers are allergic to food. Today, most of the college goers, who are allergic to food, are least concerned about the food they eat. Recent studies have found that these people who are allergic are not at all avoiding their foods.
Another shocking fact that came to light, as a result of the research, is that the friends, roommates and instructor do not really know what should be done, what steps and measures should be taken at the advent of an attack of an allergic reaction to a student. The research has thrown light to the fact, that it is extremely necessary to impart awareness, among the individuals and the people around them, about food allergy. Today’s youth seemed to have taken very lightly the threat of food allergy which can even prove deadly at times.
Though there are a number of ways to diagnose an allergic reaction but there is no definitive way to diagnose a food allergy. The only way to diagnose a food allergy is to feed the child with the food and detect if the child develops any symptoms of food allergy which may react seriously. And if they notice any reaction, then prompt action should be taken for the treatment. However, researchers and immunologists are still working on ways to find how to diagnose food allergy without having the child to expose to any risk.
Researches are still too far where food allergy is concerned. The Food Standards Agency is also all set to research on the impact of external factors on food allergy. Though it might sound a little funny but food allergy can be life-threatening if not taken care of in time. Researchers are still putting in all their efforts in trying to find a vaccine that will ease the treatment of food allergy. But for the moment the only way to safeguard yourself from this life threatening reaction is to avoid the foods that trigger the reactions.
