It is quite normal for women to develop acne during pregnancy. This is mainly due to hormonal changes that take place in the body of the women during this period. There are also a number of variations such as variations in the skin condition, hair growth etc. Because of the fluctuations in the level of the hormones, the skin becomes quite oily which block the pores and becomes infected. Thus it is not surprising to hear a pregnant mother suffering from acne. Despite having the best skin, you might suffer from acne because of the hormonal changes that are taking place in your body. The pimples may become very evident and severe during the first trimester.
Acne during pregnancy generally tends to develop around the lips, back, shoulder, chest etc. Though, this does not mean that these pimples are limited to these areas only. It can develop in other parts of the body as well. Though there are a number of acne medications available both topical and oral, however it is best to avoid them as the chemicals can effect the fetus that is developing in the womb. Thus before taking up any sort of treatment, always consider the safety of the baby first. Always consult your doctor. Following are some of the things that can be done to treat pregnancy acne:
1) Wash the area with an anti bacterial soap. It will help in getting rid of the dirt, bacteria and oil that could lead to the formation of acne.
2) Exfoliate your skin twice a week. It would be helpful in getting rid of the dry skin and lead to the regeneration of new cells that will make your skin look firmer and smoother.
3) Instead of the over the counter medications, it is better to stick to acne home remedies and natural acne treatments that have the least side effects.
4) A well-balanced diet and regular exercise is important. It will be helpful in increasing the blood circulation. And an increased blood circulation will effectively help in pushing out harmful bacteria.
5) Drink lots of water as it helps in flushing out your system. This way your body handles the situation of clogged pores. Thus the more hydrated you are the better it is.
6) Instead of using the oil-based make up, switch over to the water-based make up. Always read the labels to know if it has been designed to prevent acne breakouts.
7) Preferably use mild astringents. But as far as possible avoid using any medications whether it is oral or topical. Both types of treatments have the potential to harm your baby.
Pregnancy acne, generally, goes away with the progress of the pregnancy. You do not have to do anything about it. It is just a matter of waiting for a couple of weeks. Once you reach the second or third trimester, your skin will be much better than it ever was. So the primary key for the treatment of pregnancy acne is patience.
