Gout Prevention – Measures to avoid gout

It has been well said that ‘prevention is better than cure’. It is best to adhere to a strict diet rather than stick to medications for the latter has the potential of serious side effects associated with it. The best way to avoid gout is to reduce the intake of purines in any form.


High purine foods are soy products, sweetbread, mincemeat, beans, peas, liver, brain, kidney, anchovies, red meat, crab, shrimps, mackerel, etc. can contribute to excessive uric acid formation which causes gout.


Here are some preventive measures which would help you to avoid gout:


1) If you are overweight, see to it that you start a weight reducing program after consulting your doctor. Keep your weight under check.

2) Reduce your intake of dairy products and meats which are high in purines.

3) Avoid alcohol consumption, foods high in protein, coffee and soft drinks.

4) Eliminate simple sugar, simple carbohydrate, saturated fats and fructose from your diet.

5) Do not consume excess of any food, also limit your intake of poultry and fish.

6) Avoid beer and distilled water, also avoid smoking. These are very harmful for gout.

7) Maintain some movement and all the time. Try not to keep your joints fixed in one position for a long time.

8) Avoid eating vegetables asparagus, mushroom, lentils, peas, spinach, etc. these are high in purines.

9) Avoid junk foods.

10) Eliminate artificial sweetener from your diet.


Now, that you are aware of the foods and drinks that are high in purines, it is best to avoid them to prevent the repeated attacks of gout. Some people inspite of being diagnosed with gout, continue to consume these foods, which leads the illness to persist.


So, if you want to completely cure yourself, without any medications, then strictly follow the diets and exclude those that are high in purine.
