Causes of Tonsillitis
Tonsils are the fleshy cluster, located on the sides of the throat. It is a part of the immune system of the body which acts as a filter to trap germs from entering the body.
Tonsillitis is the infection that leads to inflammation of the tonsils. As a result of which the tonsils usually turn red and swollen and is often coated with a yellow, gray or white substance. Tonsillitis often occurs with a throat infection, which is usually accompanied by sore throat and difficulty in swallowing.
Tonsillitis causes
Tonsillitis can be categorized into acute, sub-acute and chronic.
Acute tonsillitis is most commonly caused by virus which is responsible for causing common cold. The bacteria GABHS which leads to strep throat is also a common cause of acute tonsillitis. If not treated, can cause rheumatoid fever and lead to further complications. Acute mononucleosis can also cause severe tonsil inflammation.
Sub-acute and chronic tonsillitis are caused by bacteria and may last longer than the acute inflammation. Among adults and adolescents, it is most commonly caused by the bacteria streptococcus, staphylocci, pneumococci, or hemophilus bacteria.
Fungi or parasites can also cause it, but cases such as these, occur rarely in people with strong immune system.
Other common reasons for this inflammation:
1) a sore throat may develop into tonsillitis
2) It can also be caused by toxic condition of the system and low vitality
3) Chronic constipation
4) Exposure to sudden chill
5) Repeated throat infection
6) Constant dry coughing
7) Excessive intake of sweets, chewing gum, tamarind, toffees, spices, pungent foods, etc.
8) Sinusitis can also cause tonsil inflammation.
The inflammation occurs most commonly among children between the age group of 5-10 years and usually, is not associated with any complications. It gets better without any treatment, as it is a self limiting condition.
