A chronic sinusitis lasts longer than an acute sinusitis. It usually last for more than 12 weeks and can continue for months or even years. In some cases the infection last lifelong.
Most cases of chronic sinus infection develop from acute sinus infection however the causes of sinus infection are not largely known. Allergies and inhalation of foreign particles are usually referred to as the most common cause of chronic infection. Other than this it could be also due to dehydration, stress, poor air quality, narrow sinuses, change in temperature etc.
Some of the causes are listed below:
1) Allergies: chances of a chronic infection is quite high among those who have a weak immune system and are prone to allergies that are caused by food particles, airborne particles, chemicals, fabric, etc. however by avoiding the things you are allergic to you can avoid the symptoms.
2) Pregnancy: there is a chance of suffering from nasal inflammation during pregnancy because of the hormonal change that takes place.
3) Birth control pills: in some cases among women, who are used to taking birth control pills is very likely to suffer from it as it causes an imbalance in your hormones which may cause sinus infection.
4) Nasal polyps: nasal polyps may be another cause of inflammation. Polyps are small grape like cyst formed inside the nose which obstructs the nasal passage.
5) Asthma: asthma patients are more likely to suffer from nasal inflammation.
6) Tumors: another main cause could be tumors which can be removed surgically.
7) Weak immune system: people who have a weak immune system or those who are HIV positive are more prone to sinus inflammation.
Abnormal structure of the nose can also cause chronic sinusitis. The symptoms of sinusitis are more irritating and annoying than being painful. Chronic sinusitis is not infectious like the acute sinus infection however frequent attacks of acute sinus infection may develop to chronic inflammation.
