Safe Acne Medications During Pregnancy

1) Erythromycin: This medication is available both as oral and topical. The oral medication is used for the treatment of severe cases of acne.
2) Clindamycin: This medication is also available both in oral and topical prescriptive form. Since it is an antibiotic that is related to erythromycin, it is considered as safe.
3) Azelaic Acid: This is a topical cream which is used for the treatment of moderate acne with anti-bacterial effects. So far the use of this topical application has not resulted in any risk.
4) Oral contraceptive pills: For some women, oral contraceptive pill is effective in controlling acne.
5) Benzoyl Peroxide: This medication is used as a topical treatment that helps in skin peeling and cleanses the pores with its anti bacterial properties.
Treatments To Be Avoided During Pregnancy
There are some medications and treatments that must be strictly avoided by pregnant women as these medications have the tendency to harm the fetus. In addition to the Accutane and Retina that have been mentioned earlier, there are some more medications and treatments such as Hormone therapy, Isotretinoin, oral tetracyclines, and topical retinoids. These medications must be strictly avoided by pregnant and breast feeding mothers as it has the tendency to cause severe side effects in the child which may cause birth defects as well.
